Annoucements:

  • Authors' Tea will be Wed., February 11!

Classroom Information:

ELA 1:

  • We have started something NEW for ELA 1! We are implementing Reading Workshop, where students read an at-level book of their choice everyday. They are to read 15-20 pages (depending on the student) everyday, between class and home.
  • Grades for reading the assigned number of pages each day will be calculated and posted at the end of each week. The grade will be determined by taking the total number of pages read that week and dividing it by 5. It is out of 20 points possible, with some opportunity for extra credit for reading extra pages!
  • Each week, students will also be responsible for completing a Reading Workshop assignment-either a literature letter or a round table discussion card. These are due on Thursday each week!

ELA 2:

  • Our 2nd Authors' Tea will be on Friday, February 13th! Please come and help us celebrate both our adventure stories and personal narratives.
  • We are working through the writing process in Writers' Workshop, focusing on adventure stories. Students are setting goals for themselves each day, and reflecting on how well they worked. You will notice a Daily Goal grade given each week, based on their goals and reflections, as well as work ethic.
  • We continue to have Word Study (aka a spelling list) each week. Students have a individualized list of 5 words to focus on each week. On Fridays, they will take a spelling test over those 5 words. Please encourage your child to practice at home!
  • As we look at different parts of speech, we are taking quizzes each Fridays on the part of speech that we studied that week.

Science:

  • Electromagnetic Fishing Derby will be on Thursday, February 12th!
  • Science Extra Credit: Throughout our electricity unit, students are invited to bring in current event articles that is related to electricity. These may be newspaper, magazine, or internet articles. To receive extra credit, the student must give a 2-3 sentence summary, emphasizing the main points of the article.
